Community Heroes: How I teach children to become resilient learners by showing them, and myself, empathy

“My experience at 32 Pages has taught me that children fall behind not for a lack of resources, but because they associate learning spaces with negative experiences and feelings,” says Ms Tamara Tan Ann, 24, of her ground-up initiative.

Thirty-two (32) is the average number of pages in a children’s picture book. And that is how long co-founders Chloe Ng (NUS Geography ’23) and Tamara Tan (NUS Psychology ‘23) think it takes to gift a lesson on resilience, friendship, and passion. Inspired by the stories of rental flat child residents, the pair kick-started their preschool literacy programme Little Readers, Big Dreams to nurture the strengths of less privileged children in our midst. At the heart of it, 32 Pages aims to show what an inclusive Singapore can look like and how we can contribute to that vision.

On 20th January 2024, 32 Pages had the opportunity to be a part of the launch of Building All Ground-ups for Success (BAGUS) Together. This event was a milestone for all ground-ups in Singapore, and solidified our community-centric approach.

We are deeply heartened by NVPC's efforts to shape the future of SG's ground-up landscape and look forward to new collaborations.

In February 2023, 32 Pages had the opportunity to share more about our work at NUS Social Impact Catalyst’s Project Demo Day, and connect with other projects who inspire us with their passion and brilliance. It was a day filled with excitement as we interacted with a variety of passionate individuals/groups, and were honored to be recognized as one of the top 3 Social Enterprises! (Disclaimer: We are not a social enterprise). We are immensely grateful for the opportunity, and hope to continue on our path of creating avenues for children to learn and connect with others.

We are delighted to be affiliates with Youth Corps Singapore and to be part of their 10th year anniversary celebration. Having the opportunity to get to know other community partners and hearing about their work and dreams for the space was truly inspirational.
